Karahi Chicken

As promised to all those people sending requests on my Youtube channel to post the list of ingredients for my recipes, here it is. The ingredients list for ‘Best Karachi Chicken Curry’. This is one of my favourite chicken curries, the reason being that it has got so many layers of deep flavours. Cooking the onions until deep golden gives it a caramelised taste and all the spices add lots of smokiness and heat to it. The pepper and onions at the end add the crunch and sharpness to it. All in all this is a crowd pleaser great to serve with some rice or naan.

  • 4 tbsp sunflower oil
  • 1 tsp fenugreek seeds
  • 4 red chillies
  • 4 medium sized onions, thinly sliced
  • 8 chicken thighs with bones
  • 2 heaped tbsp tomato puree
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • 1 tbsp coriander powder
  • 1 tbsp kashmiri chilli powder
  • 50 ml hot water
  • 1 green pepper, cut into cubes
  • 1 red onion, cut into cubes
  • 2 tbsp double cream

For the dry spices

  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp fennel seeds
  • 1 tbsp coriander seeds
  • 1 tbsp fenugreek leaves

  2. Hi, beginner cook here and I made this recipe today! It came out great. I used American chili powder and 1tbsp sour cream instead of Kashmiri chili powder and double cream, and the substitutions worked out fine— a little less robust in color, but not in taste. Thank you for your beginner-friendly instructions, I am inspired to try more!

  3. I cooked this this evening and it was simple and delicious. It is definitely likely to be a favourite.
If I have one criticism it is that the recipe does not say dried red chillies but red chillies ,hence I bought fresh. It did not detract from the meal though and I would recommend it. Thank you Chetna. X

  4. Hi Chetna, looks like a great curry. However, I don’t do videos and see that you don’t do instructions or methods to utilise the recipe. Any possibility of instructions in the future and of course instructions for this curry ASAP…;-)

    Thanks in advance.

  5. Hi Chetna

Sorry only just found you, great videos, easy to follow and your food looks great.

Quick question, could I substitute the Chicken for Lamb, if so what cut of Lamb would work best and would the method change?

  6. Hi Chetna
If possible do leave instructions here on the blog for those of who prefer following a written recipe in the kitchen to a video with all its hassles of pausing, noting and so on.
I hope you do take note. Thank you and you’ve got a lovely blog here 🙂

  7. Hi Chetna
Last night we had the chicken Karahi. Excellent! Did the lemon rice with it. Very tasty curry and the rice was certainly a great accompaniment. 4/4 meals so far! Thank you so much for great recipes that don’t disappoint.
